چکیده

The main idea of generalized intelligent tutoring system (ITS) development tools like Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) is to provide authors with high-level standards and a readily reusable structure within different domains. Hence, adapting such a tool could be the best way to boost an underdeveloped tutor. In this paper we propose the design for a new GIFTbased tutor for undergraduate thermodynamics. An existing Thermodynamics Cycle Tutor has been designed that is meant to facilitate problem framing for undergraduate students. We describe the advantages of integrating this tutor with GIFT to add student models. Also an approach for evaluating the pedagogical performance of the GIFT-enhanced tutor is described.

Authoring plug-in tutor agents by demonstration: Rapid, rapid tutor development

We combined two existing methods for rapid tutor development: “plug-in tutor agents” [6] and an authoring tool suite (CTAT) that supports the creation of tutors “by demonstration” [2]. The combined approach, which has not been tried before, is suited for adding tutoring capabilities to an existing problem-solving environment, for example an off-the-shelf simulator. Connecting the components (i....

Collaborative Authored Simulation-Centered Tutor Components

As we have developed a number of authoring systems for simulation-centered tutorial development, each successive authoring system has achieved its original goals, and yet has been quickly shown to have limitations that motivated the next authoring system. The history of these systems reveals two emerging requirement themes. The first theme is that there is a need for more than one level of tuto...

Authoring Tutors with SimStudent: An Evaluation of Efficiency and Model Quality

Authoring Intelligent Tutoring Systems is expensive and time consuming. To reduce costs, the Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools and the Example-Tracing Tutor paradigm were developed to make the tutor authoring process more efficient. Under this paradigm, tutors are constructed by demonstrating behavior directly in a tutor interface, reducing the need for programming expertise. This paper evaluates...

The Frequency of Tutor Behaviors: A Case Study

For cross-pollination between ITS authoring tools, it may be useful to know the prevalence of tutoring behaviors crafted with these tools. As a case study, we analyze the problem units of Mathtutor, a web-based intelligent tutor for middle-school mathematics built, as an example-tracing tutor, with the Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools (CTAT). We focus on tutoring behaviors that are relevant to a...

Rapid Authoring of Intellegent Tutors for Real-World and Experimental Use

Authoring tools for Intelligent Tutoring Systems are especially valuable if they not only provide a rich set of options for the efficient authoring of tutoring systems but also support controlled experiments in which the added educational value of new tutor features is evaluated. The Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools (CTAT) provide both. Using CTAT, real-world ”Example-Tracing Tutors” can be crea...
